Mike Goldman, Chairman, Maccabi USA Men's Softball, announced today that Dan Winters of Burbank, CA and Paul Rubin, of Scottsdale, AZ, will be the head coaches of the Open Men's and Masters Men's Fastpitch Softball Teams, respectively, that will compete at the 19th World Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 17 - 30, 2013.
"We are very excited to have Dan Winters and Paul Rubin as our head coaches," Goldman said. "Not only are they both veterans of the Maccabi USA Fastpitch Softball program, but they are also two of the most knowledgeable and respected members of the broader Fastpitch Softball community. With these two great competitors at the helm, our men's teams will be well-positioned to compete for gold in Israel."
Dan Winters, Head Coach of the USA Open Men's Fastpitch Softball Team, is originally from Dayton, OH, and has participated as a member of the USA Open Men's Softball Team in the 14th and 18th Maccabiah Games in Israel, where the team won silver medals, as well as the 11th Pan Am Maccabi Games in Argentina. Most recently, he was the Head Coach for the USA Open Men's Team at the 12th Pan Am Maccabi Games in São Paulo, Brazil in December 2011, where he led the team to a gold medal. Prior to his Maccabi experiences, Winters was an all-Big Ten catcher at Indiana University, where he later was an assistant coach of the Baseball team. He also played professional Baseball in the Oakland A's, San Francisco Giants and New York Mets organizations.
Paul Rubin, Head Coach of the USA Masters Men's Fastpitch Softball Team, is originally from New Haven, CT and has participated as an athlete and coach in four Maccabiah Games and two Pan Am Maccabi Games. Rubin was a member of the USA Open Men's Teams at the 12th, 13th and 14th Maccabiah Games and the USA Masters Men's Team at the 18th Maccabiah Games, accumulating three gold medals (12th, 13thand 18th) and one silver medal (14th). Additionally, he competed as a member of the Masters Men's Team at the 11th Pan Am Maccabi Games in Argentina, and as the Head Coach of the Masters Men's Team at the 12th Pan Am Maccabi Games in São Paulo, Brazil. Rubin has also played on 10 national championship Fastpitch Softball teams, including leading a Maccabi USA team to the ASA Over 40 National Championship in Prescott, AZ in 2010. He will be inducted into the Arizona Softball Hall of Fame in August.
There are two tryouts scheduled for both the USA Open and Masters Men's teams, one on the West Coast in Encino, CA on June 10th and one in Westchester County, NY on July 1. Both teams will be fully appointed in July 2012, with 15 athletes and 10 alternates each.
